Orange Romania

Orange Romania is the mobile telecommunications market leader in Romania with over 11 million customers and over 2700 employees. Orange Romania has invested more than 2.5 billion euros since 1997 and is constantly investing in the network development, new technologies, products, and services. One of these new emerging technologies is 5G, the current commercial network offering maximum download speeds of up to 1.5 Gbps and average speeds of 600 Mbps. Positioning itself as a leader in Research, Development and high-tech telecommunications, Orange Romania features a technical department, managing existing and new technologies, products and services and piloting their techno-economical assessment and integration in the network. Orange Romania, through its Development & Innovation team, is part of several research, development and innovation projects based on the Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, DEP, CEF and RRF EU calls, looking for further developments of current 5G networks, requirements and standardizations for future 6G networks, energy-efficient networks, autonomous networks, Open-RAN security, IoT, cybersecurity and more. Orange Romania’s research infrastructure is hosted within the 5G Lab (https://5glab.orange.ro/en/) facilities from Bucharest and Iasi. This infrastructure is composed by a series of software and hardware components, including open software tools, integrated into an end-to-end functionality scenario. The federated testbed is equipped with latest generation of software and hardware solution for 5G SA RAN and Core Network, including eMBB and URLLC slicing capabilities, advanced programable network solutions based on next-generation IP-FABRIC concepts, MANO functions that are orchestrating the edge-cloud high-performance compute infrastructure deployed in the two laboratories and also flagship 5G devices that are able to fully benefit from the network performance and capabilities. Orange Romania’s infrastructure is also securely open to third party experimenters, coming from start-ups, SMEs and large enterprises, that are willing to test and validate their network applications or devices on the top of the 5G Labs' private cellular network and compute resources. In this regard, Orange Romania is also actively part of the local start-up ecosystem through its Orange Fab accelerator (https://www.orangefab.ro/en/), which supports small businesses in order to improve their products, better market their solutions and gain direct access to company’s B2B and B2C customers.
