Across Connecting Europe Facility Digital Large-Scale 5G projects, innovative use cases are demonstrating the real-world potential of 5G to enhance disaster resilience, situational awareness, secure communications, and the protection of critical systems, with solutions designed to be replicated and scaled across the continent.

5G‑based Public Protection and Disaster Relief

PPDR 5G project aims to provide high quality, secure and disaster resilient communications for police, border guards and ambulance services on the Hungarian‑Ukrainian border. 

The PPDR 5G project will deploy an extensive 5G‑based disaster‑resilient mobile network along the Hungary‑Ukraine border, to provide police, border guards and ambulance services with secure and reliable real‑time voicedataimage and video communication, as well as enabling connected vehicles.

5G.RURAL

5G for rural smart communities of tomorrow

This project will enable the deployment of smart community services in villages, with a focus on healthcare, education, energy efficiency, agriculture, art, culture and tourism. 

The project’s 5G neutral host network will enable the use of sensors, geofencing, real-time personal alarm monitoring, and a data analysis and monitoring platform, allowing the telemonitoring of elderly individuals in their homes, to detect falls, risk events such as gas leaks, and deviations from daily habits, allowing emergency contacts to be alerted immediately and, by doing so, decreasing the likelihood of serious injury or fatal outcomes. The network will also enable the use of a social app to promote the physical and cognitive well-being of the elderly, increasing their autonomy.

5G for a Better Tomorrow: Protecting Lives and the Environment in Riga and Turin 

The project will enable the development of an emergency management and risk prevention service focusing on search and rescue operations in Riga and on the management of natural disasters in Turin. 

The project’s private 5G network will enable real-time control of drones to monitor large recreational areas for emergency situations and transmit high-definition video and sensor data, allowing surveillance for search and rescue operations, identification of endangered individuals (in water or on ice) and monitoring the area for potential safety hazards.

5G Connected Danube Delta

The purpose of the project is to bridge the digital divide in Romania’s remote Danube Delta. 5G for WATer supply management and Emergency Response Recovery for Ilirska Bistrica smart municipality

The project will enable real-time monitoring and control of the water supply system to improve efficiency, reduce water wastage, and enhance sustainability, with the main goal of modernising public services in Ilirska Bistrica. By leveraging 5G and internet of things (IoT) technologies, the project will strengthen emergency response capabilities by providing reliable communication and coordination during critical situations, such as wildfires, floods, and search-and-rescue missions, particularly in remote and hard-to-reach areas.

Inspiring smart communities with 5G and edge AI

The purpose of the project is to develop a smart community characterised by a dynamic living lab.
To achieve this, the project will extend the Orange Luxembourg 5G network and deploy advanced technologies including multi-access edge computing (MEC), and edge artificial intelligence (edge AI) in the urban environment of the neighbourhood of Belval in Luxembourg. The network will detect patterns and identify anomalies or unusual behaviour in real time, including overcrowding or sudden changes in movement. Data collected from cameras and sensors, including Intelli-towers, continuously feed situational awareness systems.
