Working Group 1 - Scaling 5G Infrastructure Deployment and Innovation

The 5G for Smart Communities (5GSC) Working Group 1 session, titled "Scaling 5G Infrastructure Deployment and Innovation," held on 22 May 2025, brought together leading experts to explore the integration of AI and edge computing in 5G networks.
Moderated by Jean-Luc Lemmens (IDATE) and chaired by Dimitri Jungblut (5GMEC4EU), the session featured a keynote by Ilhem Fajjari (Orange) on "5G and edgeAI," highlighting the transformative potential of AI at the network edge.
The open discussion, co-chaired by Ioannis Patsouras (WINGS ICT Solutions), Clara Ulken (Gcore), and David Kennedy (6GSNS), delved into AI-driven automation in 5G networks, the role of open APIs in enabling new services and revenue streams, and the application of AI and APIs across various industries, including healthcare, smart cities, logistics, and manufacturing. The session also included a presentation of the 5GSC platform and marketplace, emphasising collaborative opportunities in the 5G ecosystem.

Working Group 2 - 5G for Smart Cities & Urban Connectivity

The 5G for Smart Communities (5GSC) Working Group 2 session, titled " 5G for Smart Cities & Urban Connectivity”, held on 19 June 2025, brought together leading experts to explore how 5G is supporting urban digital transformation, ensuring secure future-proof urban networks.
Moderated and chaired by Fredrik Engströmer (Region Stockholm), the session featured two keynotes. The first one, by Eric Giraud-Desjuzeur (SNCF RESEAU), was on “The SNCF’s Future Railway Mobile Communication System for train digital operation combined with passenger connectivity”, whereas the second one, by Cristian Patachia Sultanoiu (Orange Romania), delved into the Danube Delta Project’s use cases from digital education, telemedicine, to environmental monitoring and slow tourism.
The open discussion, co-chaired by Inga Barisa (City of Riga) and Tom Collins (Citymesh), delved into the challenges, opportunities & cross-sector collaboration for the deployment of 5G in cities and urban areas, exploring also some relevant use cases: 5G-enabled railway networks, emergency services / drones, and healthcare. Focus was also given to topics such as ensuring future-proof urban networks, scaling of pilot projects, best models for cooperation between telecom operators, municipalities, and industries, and on the role of national and EU policies in the support of cross-sector 5G adoption.

Healthcare subgroup

The event brought together key project representatives from the CEF funded projects across Europe to showcase innovative applications from transmission and visualisation of patient information, using augmented and virtual reality to drone-enabled healthcare logistics, robotic surgery and telemedicine, while also addressing the technical and operational role of edge infrastructure in hospital settings.

Cloud and EdgeAI subgroup

The 5G for Smart Communities (5GSC) Cloud and EdgeAI Subgroup session took place on July 17, 2025, and delved into the technological, and regulatory challenges from CEF projects, examined security risks and mitigation strategies, and showcased real-world use cases of private 5G networks and cloud-edge synergies.
Participants also discussed socio-economic drivers and value models for MEC adoption and had the chance to offer their insights into the risks, opportunities, and next steps for advancing EU digital infrastructure.

Working Group 3 - Business and Investment Models for 5G pilots

The 5G for Smart Communities (5GSC) Working Group 3 session, titled " Business and investment models for 5G pilots”, held on 18 September 2025, explored the path from pilot to profit in 5G, with keynotes on investment and commercialisation. It highlighted scalable use cases and opened a discussion on business models, partnerships, and support needed to accelerate 5G adoption.
Moderated and chaired by Christophe Bodin (CBO Consulting), the session featured two keynotes. The first one, by Francesco Macri'(Vodafone + Fastweb), focused on “The MPNs and the related unlocked use cases”, whereas the second one, by Pierre-Yves Danet (GUIDE), delved into the "Lessons learned from GUIDE and 5G Corridors".
The open discussion, co-chaired by Micaela Bassani (Vodafone+ Fastweb), delved into how to scale 5G for Smart Cities & Urban Connectivity and the embedded challenges and opportunities as well as the need for cross-sectoral collaboration. Colm Browning from Smart Docklands contributed with the practical insights from the project deployment and implementation.
